MOBILE OPERATING SYSTEM

MOBILE OPERATING SYSTEM

A mobile operating system is an operating system for mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, 2-in-1 PCs, smart speakers, or other mobile devices. While computers such as typical laptops are ‘mobile’, the operating systems used on them are generally not considered mobile ones, as they were originally designed for desktop computers that historically did not have or need specific mobile features. This line distinguishing mobile and other forms has become blurred in recent years. This is due to the fact that newer devices have become smaller and more mobile unlike hardware of the past. Key notabilities blurring this line are the introduction of tablet computers and light-weight laptops.
Mobile operating systems combine features of a desktop computer operating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use, and usually including a wireless inbuilt modem and SIM tray for telephony and data connection.

In Quarter 1 2018, over 383 million smartphones were sold (highest ever recorded) with 86.2 percent running Android and 12.9 percent running iOS.

Nonetheless, although not as many as 2018 (1.56 billion), 2021 still had soaring sales, 1.43 billion to be exact with 83.32 percent being Android. Android alone is more popular than the popular desktop operating system Microsoft Windows, and in general smartphone use (even without tablets) outnumbers desktop use.
Mobile devices, with mobile communications abilities (e.g., smartphones), contain two mobile operating systems – the main user-facing software platform is supplemented by a second low-level proprietary real-time operating system which operates the radio and other hardware. Research has shown that these low-level systems may contain a range of security vulnerabilities permitting malicious base stations to gain high levels of control over the mobile device.
Mobile operating systems have majority use since 2017 (measured by web use); with even only the smartphones running them (excluding tablets) having majority use, more used than any other kind of device. Thus traditional desktop OS is now a minority-used kind of OS; see usage share of operating systems. However, variations occur in popularity by regions, while desktop-minority also applies on some days in countries such as United States and United Kingdom.
There are mainly 3 Types of Mobile Operating Systems used in Mobile Phones :-

(1) ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM :-

ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM

Android is one of the most popular operating systems for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, smart watches, and smart TVs. There are many reasons for its success, but two are probably the most relevant : it runs on an incredibly large variety of hardware configurations, which allows users to choose between high-level and cheaper devices, and it is highly customizable.
Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open source software.
It is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets of all companies. Android is developed by a consortium of developers known as the Open Handset Alliance and commercially sponsored by Google. It was unveiled in November 2007, with the first commercial Android device, the HTC Dream, being launched in September 2008.
Most versions of Android are proprietary. The core components are taken from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which is free and open-source software (FOSS) primarily licensed under the Apache License.
Over 70 percent of Android smartphones run Google’s ecosystem, some with vendor-customized user interface and software suite, such as TouchWiz and later One UI by Samsung, and HTC Sense.
Android has been the best-selling OS worldwide on smartphones since 2011 and on tablets since 2013. As of May 2021, it has over three billion monthly active users, the largest installed base of any operating system, and as of January 2021, the Google Play Store features over 3 million apps. Android 13, released on August 15, 2022, is the latest version.

(2) IOS OPERATING SYSTEM :-

iOS (formerly iPhone OS) is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for its hardware. It is the operating system that powers many of the company’s mobile devices, including the iPhone. The term also included the versions running on iPads until iPadOS was introduced in 2019, as well as on the iPod Touch devices, which were discontinued in mid-2022. It is the world’s second-most widely installed mobile operating system, after Android. IOS is the basis for three other operating systems made by Apple : iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS. It is proprietary software, although some parts of it are open source under the Apple Public Source License and other licenses.
It is specially designed for Apple iphones and ipads.
Features of IOS Platform
(A) Multitasking : iPhone offers multitasking features. …
(B) Social Media : Sharing content and displaying an activity stream are just a few of the ways iOS makes it simple to integrate social network interactions into the app.
(C) iCloud : Apple’s iCloud is a service that offers Internet-based data storage
iOS is generally faster and smoother
Performance is one of the things iOS usually does better than Android. This seems ridiculous considering iPhone internals.

(3) HARMONY OS OPERATING SYSTEM :-

HARMONY OS OPERATING SYSTEM

HarmonyOS (HMOS) is a distributed operating system developed by Huawei to collaborate and interconnect with multiple smart devices on the Internet of Things ecosystem. In its current multi-kernel design, the operating system selects suitable kernels from the abstraction layer for devices with diverse resources. For IoT devices, the system is known to be based on LiteOS kernel, while for smartphones and tablets, it is based on a Linux kernel layer with AOSP libraries to support legacy APK apps, in addition to native Harmony OS HAP apps via the ARK Compiler.
The system includes a communication base DSoftBus for integrating physically separate devices into a virtual Super Device, allowing one device to control others and sharing data among devices with distributed communication capabilities. It supports several forms of apps, including the apps that can be installed from App Gallery on smartphones and tablets, installation-free Quick apps and lightweight Atomic Services accessible by users.
HarmonyOS was first used in Honor smart TVs in August 2019. and later used in Huawei smartphones, tablets and smartwatches in June 2021.
HarmonyOS is a next-gen operating system that can run on a wide range of smart devices. It enables different smart devices to speak the same language, facilitating better connection and collaboration, and bringing a simple, smooth, continuous, secure and reliable interaction experience in all scenarios.
